Polished looks poolside

Summer heat, humidity and – hopefully – hanging by the water require formulas that won’t budge.

-

Now the weather is behaving itself again, the summer party season is in full swing and chances are you’re joining in on the fun.

By day – if you’re not back to work that is – you’re possibly heading to the beach or lying by a pool, and at night, heading to a party or a bar. And you still want to look polished, but without the time and effort it takes to do a full face of slap.

This is where a “statement eye” comes in, which is beauty speak for highlighting your peepers over all else, using fuss-free and high-performance formulas.

Whenever the weather is steamy, it’s best to switch to waterproof formulas when it comes to eye products. There’s nothing worse than mid-day mascara or eyeliner meltdowns, and with the heat from the body and the summer’s high temperatures, most will end up either running or will have to be reapplied all day long.

A waterproof eyeliner won’t smear or run and can even handle the swimming

pool, and the same goes for some brilliant waterproof mascara formulas like Bobbi Brown No Smudge Mascara ($62), M.A.C False Lashes Waterproof Mascara ($48) and YSL Beauty’s Volume Effect Faux Cils Mascara Waterproof ($66).

When it comes to waterproof liner, if you opt for a popping shade as opposed to black, you can save time on faffing about with eyeshadow, too.

A great option is Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Bold Defining 24hr Liquid Eye

Liner in Plum Desire ($48), which also comes very close in shade to Pantone’s 2018 Colour of the Year, UltraViolet, so you’re bang on trend.

The micro-fine applicator tip glides on with ease to create a precise look directly on the lash line, and the buildable formula is waterproof, smudge proof, transfer proof, sweat proof and quick drying.

For a non-liquid formula that lasts, YSL Beauty’s Dessin Du Regard Stylo

Waterproof Eyeliner ($66) is a longwear twist-up eyeliner with built-in sharpener, making it perfect for your handbag and travel. It comes in four rich shades, is oil free and easy to apply on the go.

Summer is when you can give your smouldering smoky eye a break, opting instead for an application of the warm tones that will be popping up everywhere this summer. It’s no surprise that searches for “sunset eyeshadow” are up 285 per cent on social media – it’s a look that is bound to impress, if you have the time and the inclination.

The best option I’ve found with the full spectrum of scorched hues in one place is Urban Decay’s Naked Heat Palette ($91). For extra longevity use an eye primer or cream shadow – such as M.A.C Pro Longwear Paint Pot

($48) in Painterly – as a base for the powder formula to grip to: it won’t budge!

Last up, with all of this waterproof, longwear eye makeup on board you’re going to have to remove the whole thing eventually, and

they don’t come much better than Goodness’ Break-Up Make-Up

Balm ($19). Just a small amount of this, melted in your hands before being applied to a dry face and massaged well in, will take off just about any budge-proof formula with just a warm, damp cloth. Helene Ravlich
