Bain TV series script complete

-

An Australian production company has completed a script for a mini-series about the Bain family murders and is on the hunt for actors - and a Dunedin home to star.

Sydney-based Abacus Multimedia co-owner and producer Paul Dobson told the Otago Daily Times that it has shown the script to TVNZ but is ‘‘open to any channel broadcasting it’’.

‘‘We just want it made in 2018. One of our options is to co-ordiante production ourselves in partnership with others.’’

The company plans to shoot indoor scenes at Avalon Studios in Lower Hutt and outdoor scenes in Dunedin.

It is on the lookout for a house similar to the Bain family home ‘‘to burn down or appear to burn down,’’ Dobson said. The Bain family home was set on fire two weeks after the 1994 killings.

Melbourne-based New Zealander Cyril Meyer, whom Dobson said bore a ‘‘remarkable resemblance’’ to David Bain, is among those who have expressed interest in starring in the threepart television series. No one has yet been cast.

Bain was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his parents and three siblings before being released on bail in 2007 and was then found not gulity of the murders in a 2009 retrial.

The series does not pin the murders on anyone in particular, Dobson said, describing the script as ‘‘easily defensible from a legal viewpoint’’.

About 80 per cent of the scenes in the more than 2000-page script were based on fact, Dobson said, and the rest on ‘‘likely events’’.

David Bain’s penchant for knitted jerseys and singing is highlighted for ‘‘entertainment purposes’’, he said.
