Coffee with a view from the hills
"They say it's the second-best view. The best is from the moon."
Cafe owner Dmitri Rechkunov
During the week Dmitri Rechkunov is a builder and every weekend he trades his hammer for a coffee machine.
Rechkunov and his wife, Anna, operate My Coffee at Hornbrook, one of the newest establishments in Christchurch’s cafe scene.
Perched high on the Port Hills overlooking Southshore Spit, the cafe provides arguably one of the best views in the city.
‘‘That’s what people say. They say it’s the second-best view. The best is from the moon,’’ Rechkunov said.
The couple opened the business in September after Rechkunov converted a garage into a cafe at the home they rent from friends on the Summit Rd at the top of Mt Pleasant Rd.
Rechkunov emigrated to New Zealand from Russia in 2000 and moved to Christchurch three years ago.
He said he decided to set up the cafe because he liked to be busy and wanted other people to enjoy the view as well.
‘‘You can share all this and it’s amazing for sure.’’
The cafe, which serves Pink’s Elixir coffee, only opens on weekends and was proving a popular stop for cyclists traversing the Port Hills, walkers and those living close by. A water tap at the bottom of the drive was also popular with cyclists.
This is not the first time the property has been open to the public. In the early 1900s it was tearooms and has also been a bedand-breakfast and restaurant over the years, Rechkunov said.
He hopes to offer more food in the future and maybe install a pizza oven, but at the moment planned to continue with providing coffee and home-made cake.
Mt Pleasant residents Brenda Knight and Dougall Struthers, who were visiting the cafe for the first time with their two dogs yesterday, said it was a great spot.
‘‘I can’t believe it took this long for something to be up here. It’s an awesome spot.’’ Murder on Every Street
