National’s Paula Bennett steps into campaign shoes

National has appointed deputy leader

as its campaign chair for the Northcote by-election, brought about by MP Jonathan Coleman’s departure. She steps into the shoes previously filled by the party’s long-time campaign strategist Steven Joyce. Nominations for candidate closed at midday yesterday, and the party’s board will put forward a final five for local party members to consider. Bennett said the campaign ‘‘isn’t waiting’’ though, and preparations were already under way.
