Among the risks are:

❚ In­creased al­ler­gic dis­ease and res­pi­ra­tory ill­nesses such as asthma from in­creased tem­per­a­tures and higher con­cen­tra­tions of pollen;

❚ More peo­ple po­ten­tially suf­fer­ing from skin can­cers and heat-re­lated ill­nesses due to in­creased ex­po­sure to UV ra­di­a­tion;

❚ Greater con­tam­i­na­tion of wa­ter sources by dis­ease-car­ry­ing mi­cro-or­gan­isms be­cause of more favourable grow­ing con­di­tions;

❚ In­crease in dis­eases such as campy­lobac­ter in­fec­tion, Le­gion­naires’ dis­ease and ex­po­sure to sal­monella;

❚ Un­der the most ex­treme cli­mate change sce­nar­ios, ar­eas of New Zealand could be­come breed­ing grounds for mos­qui­toes car­ry­ing dengue and the Ross River viruses by 2040.
