Must-see movies of the month

-

The movie blockbuster season is in full swing over the next month. Sequels and reimaginations abound, but there’s still room for the odd bigbudget comedy (Jeremy Renner and Jon Hamm’s June 14 release Tag) and a smattering of more arthouse oriented fare (Donald Sutherland and Helen Mirren team up for June 21’s The Leisure Seeker, the same day French film festival favourite C’est La Vie is released)

However, after checking out what’s on offer this month, Stuff has come up with these five options that should be wellworth visiting the cinema for.

Ocean’s 8 (June 7)

Initially attracting the same amount of vitriol as 2016’s similarly gender-flipped Ghostbusters, the impressive cast and a couple of exciting trailers have helped generate considerable interest in this Ocean’s trilogy spin-off.

Sandra Bullock is Danny Ocean’s estranged sister Debbie, who attempts to pull off the heist of the century at New York City’s star-studded annual Met Gala. Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Mindy Kaling co-star.

Hereditary (June 7)

Toni Collette headlines this horror movie that has already been attracting headlines, thanks to it freaking out audiences when it debuted at January’s Sundance Film Festival.

The plot revolves around a family who discover cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry after the death of their matriarch. And the more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (June 21)

Chris Pratt is back with more dino-tastic action in this sequel to the 2015 mega-blockbuster.

His dino-trainer Owen Grady teams up again with Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing when the inhabitants of Isla Nubar are threatened by a volcanic eruption.

Of course all this pales in comparison to the return of Jeff Goldblum’s chaos theory mathematician Dr Ian Malcolm.

The Incredibles 2 (June 28) Fourteen years after they helped reinvent the superhero movie, Pixar’s Parr family return for more animated adventures.

This time around, our heroes have to deal with a switch in roles as Elastigirl fights crime and campaigns for ‘‘supers’’’ rights, while Mr Incredible stays home to look after the kids, including an increasingly powerful Jack-Jack.

Sicario: Day Of The Soldado (June 28)

Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro reprise their roles from the hit 2015 action-drama. This time, the pair are sent in by the CIA to stop Mexican drug cartels from smuggling jihadi terrorists across the US border. However, their plan involving a ‘‘false flag’’ kidnapping operation goes terribly awry.
