The anti-brigade are out again and while admiring their enthusiasm, their lack of knowledge is woeful. For example, one placard at the recent rally proclaimed ‘‘1080 kills children’’.

The substance has been used since the mid-1950s, nearly 70 years ago. When is a reporter going to front these uninformed protesters and ask ‘‘so... in the last 50 years how many children has 1080 killed?’’ How many people have been admitted to hospital in New Zealand after exposure to 1080 poison drops?’’

In both instances above the answer would be ‘‘nearly one’’ Red Sapwell, Ilam just like… well, actually, I’m struggling to find reports of any similar scooter-related epidemics in other cities where these have introduced on a large scale. Meanwhile, I note that there has not been a similar flurry of concerned comments about the thing that has in the past five years actually managed to kill seven people walking and seriously injure 120 others on foot in Christchur­ch – the motor vehicle.

So somebody who gets away with tampering with the world’s greatest democracy, or successful­ly dodges the draft is, in their minds, deserving of respect because their hope lies in strength and success, not in ‘‘doing the right thing’’.
