Cherish your mobility

-

It’s a great time to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air on your mobility scooter.

Trips to the shops, park or to see friends and family become a lot easier with the help of the smooth-running, battery-powered machines, which over the years have become increasingly userfriendly.

Christine Curtis runs Wheelchair Scooter Sales/ Service Ltd with her engineer husband, Gerald, and says some mobility scooters can travel up to 50 kilometres between charges.

Design improvements have made recent models extremely stable and many can be folded for transporting by car – great when heading out with family or for taking on longer trips.

Mobility scooters have been supplied and serviced in Christchurch by Wheelchair Scooter Sales/Service Ltd for more than 30 years. The company are agents for the popular Shoprider scooters and have sub-agents across the South Island to support customers from out of town.

‘‘Mobility scooters are a fantastic for maintaining independence, and accessible after-sales service makes it even easier,’’ Christine says.

One of the most rewarding benefits is the increased social interaction scooters allow, with people able to chat with others they meet along the way.

‘‘They don’t have to wait for anyone to take them somewhere – they can just go themselves,’’ Christine says.

‘‘A lot of people go to mobility scooters after they can’t get their licence renewed and others use them as a second form of transport, taking them down to the shops to save on petrol and then using their car for longer trips.’’

Home trials can be arranged and new riders always receive instruction from Gerald on how to safely and confidently use a scooter after it has been delivered.

Gerald previously ran manufacturing for Benefis Rehabilitation in Christchurch, producing mobility scooters for the local and international markets, and his expertise is used to ensure customers are well looked after into the future.

Wheelchair Scooter Sales/ Service Ltd also has a wide range of other disability support equipment, including many items for hire.
