Northland target notable double

-

Northland have their sights set on completing the double after maintaining a 100 per cent record through two days of the women’s interprovincial golf tournament in Christchurch.

Following the success of the men’s team last week, when they claimed their maiden title in the tournament’s 68-year history, Northland find themselves three from three and have momentum that looks hard to stop.

They enjoyed two tight victories over Hawke’s Bay Poverty Bay (3-2) and Otago

(31⁄2-11⁄2) on day one before making light work of Aorangi (5-0) yesterday to be in the box seat for the tournament being played at the Waitikiri Golf Club.

‘‘We are off to a nice start and the girls are playing with a lot of confidence at the moment,’’ Northland’s Sjanna Bishop said.

‘‘After watching the boys do the business last week, it certainly has inspired us to try and match them, especially with bragging rights at stake.’’

However, Northland face what could be a tournamentdefining day today when they meet North Harbour and defending champions Auckland.

The Aucklanders barely worked up a sweat yesterday as they look to secure their seventh championship success in eight years.

They first took down Hawke’s Bay Poverty Bay in the morning round (5-0) before adding more misery to Tasman’s campaign (41⁄2-1⁄2), who have been extremely close in all of their matches but with nothing to show for their efforts.

Meanwhile, host team Canterbury produced a gritty display to overcome Manawatu/ Wanganui in the morning

(31⁄2-11⁄2) before enjoying a more stress-free afternoon by beating Taranaki (5-0).

Canterbury get today’s morning session under way against Wellington, who are also unbeaten, followed by Northland versus North Harbour.
