March to Parliament demands law reform

The Press - - News -

Hundreds of protesters marched to Parliament in Wellington to demand the decriminalisation of abortion. Abortion, while available under certain circumstances, is an offence under the Crimes Act. Co-organiser and ALRANZ (Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand) president Terry Bellamak said the law discriminated against women and pregnant people by ‘‘forcing’’ them to seek approval of two certifying consultants, then having to ‘‘lie’’ about mental health status in order to qualify for the procedure. ‘‘After 40 years, it’s long past time for reform.’’ A counter protest, the ‘‘march for life’’ is scheduled for tomorrow. It has been organised by five organisations, including Family First, Voice for Life and March for Life NZ.
