Second property cordoned off

Police have cordoned a second property in relation to the killing of a young Christchurch father.

Shayne George Heappey, a 25-year-old with a young daughter, died last Saturday night after he was dropped off at Christchurch Hospital about 11pm with lifethreatening injuries. A witness described Heappey having a stab wound in the chest.

A 50-year-old man appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Tuesday accused of stabbing Heappey with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

On Thursday night, police cordoned off a property on Stanbury Ave, Somerfield, in relation to the investigation.

A large police tent was erected on the driveway, with a grey Chrysler parked in front of the garage. The brother of the man who owns the house said he did not know why the house was cordoned.

He said his brother, who was unwell, and his wife were both in their 80s. It’s understood the search relates to other occupants of the address.

Detective Inspector Corrie Parnell confirmed the property was ‘‘of interest’’ to the investigation into Heappey’s death. ‘‘Police continue to make good progress with information supplied by the public. However, if anyone has any further information to share with police about this operation they are encouraged to contact us,’’ he said.

The 50-year-old man was granted interim name suppression at his first court appearance. His charge sheet alleged he jointly offended with at least one other person, whose identities were not yet known. Heappey’s twin brother, Marcus Heappey, said after the court appearance he would not happy until all those involved had been arrested.

Meanwhile, police remain at a property on Oakhurst Place, Russley, that is connected with the death.

Parnell said the scene examination would be completed yesterday.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said a man in his 90s had lived in the house, but recently moved into a hospice. His adopted son then began living there.
