Give shower glass that as-new look

-

When households started pulling back their shower curtains for the last time and installing glass, they were rewarded by a far more elegant look in one of a home’s most visited rooms.

There soon emerged a cost to the smarter appearance, though: higher maintenance.

Squeegeeing and extra cleaning got added to the chore list, but even then deeper stains were inevitable. That’s because minerals in water eventually get trapped in the microscopic pores of glass. Lodged just beneath the surface, the grit slowly grows into milky spots and smears.

Removing those glass stains is now a specialty business which no-one knows better than The Water Stain Doctor.

In Canterbury, The Water Stain Doctor is Geoff McClelland, whose patented ‘‘special drawing paste’’ has enjoyed remarkable success. When other glass cleaning companies find a stain too tough, it’s Geoff they call.

‘‘There’s really no-one else that achieves the results I do. I’ve restored hundreds of showers over the years and it’s extremely rare that I have to walk away from a job,’’ he says.

‘‘The product brings the glass back to as-new condition and I guarantee the work so if you don’t get that clear finish there’s no cost.’’

The Water Stain Doctor can restore a typical shower in about two hours for about $230.

If the staining is particularly bad, it can take longer. And if the stains are ignored for an especially long time, the only option might be to replace the glass at significantly greater cost and inconvenience.

For restored showers and new installations, The Water Stain Doctor can also place a special sealant over the glass pores so staining can’t return.

Geoff says this product, the Germandesigned NanoCoat Clear, pays for itself through reduced cleaning time and by removing the need for costly glass cleaning later.

‘‘Many of the DIY cleaners don’t work

as people hope they will. You can easily spend $100 and hours of your time and we still end up getting called in to give the shower that new look people want,’’ he says.

‘‘NanoCoat Clear makes cleaning a whole lot easier as well. For starters, you don’t need to squeegee after every shower. All you need to do is give the glass a wipe down using dishwashing liquid on a microfibre cloth when you’re doing your weekly clean.’’

Applying NanoCoat Clear usually takes 2-3 hours and costs about $300, depending on the size of the shower.

Geoff says higher temperatures in bathrooms over summer can worsen staining by baking stains into shower glass harder and faster.

An added risk comes from certain DIY products leaving a residue of their own, he says.

‘‘I can usually tell straight away when one of those products has been used because the glass is that much harder to clean. Honestly, it’s usually cheaper and easier to just call us first.’’

The Water Stain Doctor provides free quotes and services across Canterbury from Timaru to Hanmer Springs.

Water stains on house windows can also be removed by The Water Stain Doctor, although the process is slightly different due to the different grade of glass.
