Dunedin home ‘covered in blood’

A Dunedin property where police are investigating a person’s death is covered in blood and drag marks, a neighbour says.

The body was found at a rural Dunedin property on Monday, about 8pm. A scene examination and formal identification process was under way, police said in a statement yesterday afternoon.

A residential property at Lock St, in the seaside suburb of St Clair, was also being investigated in relation to a missing person.

A neighbour, who declined to be named, said police told him the semi-attached house was covered in blood and drag marks.

The neighbour said the young couple were known to associate with a gang associate living nearby.

Police told him they were making inquiries into the man’s whereabouts. ‘‘It used to be a nice street, but now it’s a halfway house for druggies.’’

Lock St resident MarieTherese Dobier lives in a block of Housing New Zealand homes next door to where police have erected a tent in the front yard.

Dobier said a young couple lived in the home. She last saw the woman who lived there while they were both in hospital last week and believed the man was missing.

Police said the person was reported missing on February 5, but said it was too early to confirm if the two incidents were linked.

Dobier said she was ‘‘sound asleep’’ on that night and did not hear anything. The curtains at the home had been pulled for several days, she said.

More information would be released in the coming days, police said.
