RACING THIS TIME
A highlight of Canterbury’s social calendar expect fashion, racing and entertainment at the New Zealand Cup Meeting at Riccarton Racecourse today from 10am-6pm. R18 event.
THE CHASE QUIZ
The La Vida Centre, 34a Hansons Lane, hosts a celebrity charity quiz show on Wednesday from 7pm. Special guest Shaun Wallace ‘‘The Dark Destroyer’’ from The Chase will compere and compete against Sir Bob Parker, Brett and Angel of Married At Fight Sight NZ, Melinda Collins, Jax Hamilton, Sue Wells, Aaron Keown, James Gough, Roy Snow and Adam Percival in the celebrity quiz. The charities being supported include the Christchurch Kidney Society, Bone Marrow Cancer Trust, Age Concern Canterbury, Diabetes Christchurch Inc and St John Ambulance. ROLL UP! ROLL UP!
The Extravaganza Fair, which takes place at Gloucester Green, at the corner of Gloucester and Madras streets, started yesterday and runs until tomorrow, 9am to 5pm. Free entry.
This family-friendly event offers bohemian market stalls, arts and craft, food, musical entertainment, circus shows, magic shows, a range of performers, tiny homes and more. Even the stage is solarpowered.
For children and the young at heart there are sack races, a tug-of-war, face painting, a pedal-powered merry-go-round and more. (Last time they were in town I got the best coffee from Lucky Star – he wrote the order using a white feather quill – and my fortune told by Kathleena on her birthday in a quaint housetruck).
SOMETHING ELSE FESTIVAL
Something Else is an outdoor music and arts festival, an hour and 20 minutes’ drive from Christchurch. It began yesterday and goes through until tomorrow.
This is a multi-day festival of visual, musical and performance art. Dress up, multi-genre line-up, friendly people and a focus on being playful and respectful. Something Else is a leave-no-trace event, everyone is individually responsibility for taking home everything they bring with them. Tickets, if available, $130 from Cosmic. POP-UP CARAMILK CAFE
C1 Espresso on High St has transformed itself into the first popup Caramilk Cafe until November
22. Caramilk-inspired treats on offer at the pop-up experience include: Blooming marshmallow flower Caramilk hot chocolate; Caramilk chocolate mousse with almond crumb, toasted coconut, chocolate curls and caramel; Caramilk dipped lily cake cones; Selfie Caramilk hot chocolate; Caramilk pop cakes with pistachio orange and chocolate and Caramilk and marshmallow golden egg.
SWAN LAKE
Swan Lake, presented by the Imperial Russian Ballet Company is at the Isaac Theatre Royal today, 2pm and 7.30pm.
Subtle revisions have been introduced to the original storyline by Gediminas Taranda, Artistic Director of the Imperial Russian Ballet Company.

The Zirka Big Top lands in Christchurch at Ferry Rd, Ferrymead, from next Thursday. The circus is back with its sixth tour, Into the Future.

AUNTY AND THE STAR PEOPLE
For inspiring local films you can’t go past Aunty and the Star People. A film fundraising event is being held at Hollywood 1 Cinema, Sumner, next Thursday from 8pm. The film tells the story of New Zealander Jean Watson. At age 50, Jean sold her home in Wellington and founded a children’s home in southern India.
More than 32 years later, the Karunai Illam (Grace Home) continues to be a home where children thrive. Christchurch teachers Hannah Smaill and her mother, Christine Brown, plan to teach at this school. This film screening is taking place to raise funds for them to take educational resources for the Karunai Illam and the neighbouring Karunai Dhan School.
