Universo plans Valentines’ delights
Adjoining the Christchurch Art Gallery, Universo Brasserie & Bar is a destination in its own right, offering a gourmand experience that becomes more intimate each evening as calm settles over what is the central city’s most inviting corner.
With Valentines Day approaching and the World Buskers Festival in full swing, Universo finds itself ideally positioned for relaxed group lunches and cosy dinners on a warm summer’s night.
For Valentines Day, a special five-course degustation menu costing $85 per person has been prepared. The experience begins with a glass of Allan Scott Cecilia upon arrival, and every booking goes into the draw for a magnum bottle of the exquisite homegrown methode traditionnelle.
Couples will no doubt luxuriate in a setting equal parts Euro-chic and sun-drenched tropical escape. However, Universo is also well placed to accommodate much larger groups. Up to 150 people can be hosted indoors, or up to 250 when including the outdoor area, weather permitting.
Towering glass walls, a soaring ceiling, potted palms and leather booths reflect the contemporary-cool feel of the art gallery, which Universo then extends with a menu of trendy, European-inspired dishes.
Starters such as carpaccio of venison with a herb crust served with radish, rocket, beetroot and baba ganoush can be followed by upmarket-yet-familiar mains like the chicken roulade filled with spinach and herbs, served on kumara puree and braised leek.
Shared plates are popular for snacking or as a prelude to a main but to get a feel for what Universo is all about, the top choice must be the dinner option of ‘‘Trust the Chef’’.
Available for groups of four or more, Trust the Chef provides diners with an assortment of shared plates followed by platters of the kitchen’s most popular main courses. Desserts can be added at any point.
Universo director Madlen Shaw says it’s an option that ensures no-one will leave with food envy – not an unlikely scenario otherwise, given the tantalising fare on offer. Think baked brie with cranberry, orange and pistachio compote, gremolata-crusted venison, or glazed pork belly with grilled prawns and coriander salad.
‘‘We’re so close to the Arts Centre, Hagley Park and of course the art gallery that we get everyone here, from families and Probus groups to office workers and all the tourists. But we notice that while they might find us because of our location, they keep coming back for the food,’’ Madlen says. ‘‘It’s a little more formal in the evening but we’ve made sure it’s approachable for everyone. Ten people could visit and no-one is going to have any trouble finding something to eat.’’
To secure your favourite table, early bookings are advised. Gift vouchers are also available to surprise someone at a later date.
