Windows 7 users at risk

-

Windows 7 is going viral – and not for any good reason. Microsoft withdrew all support for the operating system in January with the message everyone should migrate to Windows 10.

Now that no more security updates are coming, it is only a matter of time before computers using Windows 7 for internet browsing become infected with viruses and malware.

Care Free Computing owner Johnny Ellery says third-party providers of antivirus software are also likely to end support for Windows 7.

It is important to update as soon as possible, he says.

‘‘It’s going to get progressively worse. For people who haven’t updated yet, it’s a good idea to make sure you’re on top of servicing at the same time. That will clear away any bugs or bloated software that could be slowing down your computer or compromising its security.

‘‘We can help with servicing as well as any updates, including new hardware or a whole new computer. We do the lot, so it’s nice and easy.’’

Care Free Computing provides free pick-ups and drop-offs for computer servicing and has a variety of new and ex-lease laptops for sale. Reputable antivirus software can also be installed, along with any new hardware, such as to replace a mechanical harddrive with a faster, more durable solid-state drive.

If a new graphics card is required for Windows 10, Care Free Computing can help with that too.

‘‘You just don’t want to leave it much longer,’’ Johnny says. ‘‘Bugs can build up in a system quite quickly, to the point that we’ve never done a sweep of a computer and found it to be completely clean.

‘‘We also do a physical clean during servicing to get rid of any dust or debris, which can cause parts to overheat and fail. If your computer hasn’t been serviced in the last two years, it’s probably time,’’ he says.

Microsoft first released Windows 7 in 2009. About 400 million computers worldwide were still using the system when support ended on January 14.
