Cats that ‘ruled the square’

-

Christ Church Cathedral is now feline-free for the first time in years after the capture of Bonnie and Clyde. The feline outlaws are alive and well and adjusting to their new life in a shelter. They will eventually be rehomed together. The pair were the last two cats left roaming the earthquake-damaged cathedral and the surrounding square after more than 25 cats were rescued from the area in the past two years. Red Zone Cats founder Dr Jane Newman said together the pair ‘‘ruled the Square’’, helping prevent any other cats from making their home in the area. She has been watching Bonnie and Clyde for a while now after last year installing a feeding station and video camera inside the cenotaph gate. But, with work starting on the cathedral rebuild, her access was about to be cut off, prompting the rescue. She trapped the pair about two weeks ago within an hour of each other. They are now living at Newman’s home, where she has high hopes they will adjust to life as domestic pets.
