The Fitting Room rises to occasion

Virtual fittings add another way for customers to get the help they need.

Forward thinking helped The Fitting Room make the best of a tough situation during lockdown, with the bra boutique experiencing a surge of activity through its online store, including its first online bra fittings.

The Fitting Room’s two physical stores – in Fendalton and Sydenham – have since reopened with no restrictions on the personalised fittings so important for bridging the fashion-comfort divide.

But with the success of the shop’s first Skype fittings in April, owner Deborah Lewthwaite says that service will continue, opening the door to expert fitting advice no matter where you live.

Sports bras in particular have been popular during and since lockdown, Deborah says.

She notes that while a properfitting bra is important at all times to promote good posture and give support, comfort and shape, this is especially true when exercising.

‘‘Our Panache underwire sports bras reduce bounce by up to 83 per cent, so they’re fantastic for netball, running and all sorts of activity. It’s very popular internationally and we’re the exclusive South Island stockists,’’ she says.

The Fitting Room has sports bras in a variety of styles, including those without underwires.

Like much of the stores’ stock, they come in a plethora of sizes ranging from 8-24 in the body fit and B-JJ cup size.

The stores were founded on the belief it should be easier for women to find comfortable, wellfitted bras without compromising on style.

To that end, The Fitting Room has sourced leading brands that specialise in fullercup sizes, including Freya, Fantasie, Elomi and Panache, and they are the exclusive South Island stockists for luxury Belgium brand Prima Donna.

A huge assortment of worldleading swimwear brands was brought in for the winter holiday season – perfect for the hot pools in Hanmer Springs or New Brighton – and there is a range of post-mastectomy products.

Fittings can be booked in advance with staff acting like personal shoppers by helping select styles and sizes to ensure each person finds their best fit.

Deborah says customers appreciate The Fitting Room’s empathetic, professional support and many won’t go anywhere else for their lingerie. This makes it particularly easy to shop online, she says.

‘‘As part of our individualised service, we keep a record of previous purchases, which can be super helpful for choosing what to get next time. It’s an excellent starting point for something new, and if it doesn’t fit as hoped, free return postage is included.

‘‘Our online store really came into its own during lockdown, as did the benefits of keeping records of past purchases.

‘‘The virtual fittings now add another way for customers to get the help they need. However, for the full experience – particularly if you haven’t been fitted by us before – a visit in person is best,’’ she says.

Customers can now book fittings online, choosing the time and store, rather than having to phone or email. Just visit the website to find the link.

Free off-street parking and specially trained staff are available at both the Fendalton and Sydenham stores.
