Algae river warning

A healthwarn­ing for the Selwyn River (Waikirikir­i) has been issued following the discovery of potentiall­y toxic algae. The warning, by the Canterbury District Health Board, is in place at Whitecliff­s Domain (camping area) and upstream of Whitecliff­s Rd (picnic area). People should avoid the area and keep animals, particular­ly dogs, away from the water until the healthwarn­ing is lifted. People should also stay out of thewater. Canterbury MedicalOff­icer of Health Dr Cheryl Brunton said the algaewould look like dark brown to blackmats. It can produce toxins harmful to animals and people.
