Post-earthquake replica wows

- Colleen Hawkes

Christchurch has seen a wealth of contemporary architectural projects over the past few years, as the city rebuilds furiously after the earthquakes. But not every rebuild heads in that direction.

The winner of the Master Builders Canterbury Supreme New Home Award is a house that looks anything but new. It’s a grand house, built by Steve Brown

Builders, that re-creates all that was lost in the earthquakes.

The Canterbury Master Builders judges said the rebuilding of the heritage architecture is on an ‘‘unprecedented scale’’.

‘‘The replication and reinterpretation of traditional construction methods and craftsmanship is on display in this total rebuild of a 1912 grand home.

‘‘ From traditional brick pointing and stonemasonry, to intricate plastered ceilings and extensive timber panelling, this house has been skilfully and fastidiously recreated to its predecessor’s former glory and more.’’

The judges said the build was ‘‘a credit to an enthusiastic, committed homeowner, and a builder that has gone above and beyond in the pursuit of excellence in the construction of this unique piece of history.’’
