Food truck market has town abuzz

- Poppy Clark

Rolleston’s new food truck market is bringing together local businesses, the community and a whole lot of yummy treats.

Every Saturday from 4pm to 7pm you can find local vendors selling dumplings, burgers, barbecue, crepes, candy floss and more at the Salvation Army in Rolleston. Gluten-free and vegan options are included.

The idea of a food truck market in the rapidly growing Selwyn town became a reality for organiser Daniel Morbey when he posted on his local community page asking if anyone would be interested. His post caught the eye of Salvation Army organiser Stewart Duxfield, who offered up the organisation’s Springston Rolleston Rd site.

‘‘I live in Rolleston,’’ Morbey said. ‘‘It’s huge, with families, and there is nothing out there like this for them. This gives them an event to go to.’’

Morbey owns and runs his own food truck, Streetbowls, which produces glutenfree and vegan meals and is a regular sight across the region.

The Rolleston Food Truck Market officially launched on June 4 with nine vendors. ‘‘The first week had a bit of a buzz. There were lines and three vendors sold out completely,’’ Morbey said.

New vendors had been keen to join the market, but Morbey had turned some down to ensure the market had variety.

‘‘We want to keep it varied and in the winter we are keeping it small but in the summer we will expand.

‘‘Through the winter we are just building its reputation, getting the name out there, and then we hope it will get more popular as it goes into the warmer months.’’

He planned to add more live music and activities for families when the days got longer and warmer.

Weather and vendor updates can be found on the market’s Facebook page.
