HOW THE ALL BLACKS RATED AGAINST IRELAND IN WELLINGTON:

- PAUL CULLY

Jordie Barrett: 3 Missed a few shots at goal he should have nailed. Outplayed by classy opposite Hugo Keenan.

Will Jordan: 5 The Crusaders fullback wasn’t a threat with ball in hand during the first half and struggled defensively. However, he exploded into the test with a brilliant try in the 60th minute.

Rieko Ioane: 4 Rarely knew when to push up or drift and saw few chances on attack.

David Havili: 5 His 50-22 off his left foot in the first half was a rare highlight but there are still question marks about his ball-carrying at test level.

Sevu Reece: 4 Showed some nice footwork in tight spaces but looked one-dimensional compared to Ireland’s multiskilled back three.

Replaced after 62 minutes.

Beauden Barrett: 3 Peppered the Ireland back three with high kicks in a change of tactics, but the return was minimal. Improved his running game in the second half but his tactical work off the boot remains a major concern.

Aaron Smith: 4 His kicking was ineffective and the predictability of the All Blacks’ attack was evident as Ireland picked off an intercept from the No 9 in the second half. Replaced after 62 minutes.

Ardie Savea: 7 The Hurricanes No 8 put in an admirable personal performance on his home turf. Dragged the All Blacks back into the test with his try at the start of the second half.

Sam Cane: 3 Has been second best to Ireland No 7 Josh van der Flier throughout the series. Replaced by Dalton Papalii with about 17 minutes to go and questions about his captaincy will only increase.

Akira Ioane: 6 A replacement for the injured Scott Barrett. Justified his selection with a barnstorming try and was one of the few All Blacks who punched some holes in the excellent Ireland defence.

Sam Whitelock: 4 Set-piece woes continued despite the veteran’s return, and the All Blacks locks were clearly outpointed around the field by Ireland’s Tadhg Beirne.

Brodie Retallick: 5 Replaced in the second half following an HIA. Trying hard but not the dominant physical presence he was in his prime.

Nepo Laulala: 2 Missed an early tackle as the All Blacks were slow out of the blocks again. Risky offload inside his own 22m backfired at the end of the first half, costing the All Blacks seven points.

Codie Taylor: 2 The All Blacks’ lineout fell apart. They lost four firsthalf throws and also turned over possession when they tried to get their maul working.

George Bower: 5 Worked incredibly hard during his 71 minutes on the field.

RESERVES

Dane Coles: 4 The Hurricanes hooker saw 18 minutes on the field but Samisoni Taukei’aho’s nonselection remains a mystery.

Karl Tu’inukuafe: N/A A late change for Aidan Ross, who succumbed to a calf injury. Rolled on at the end of the test but Ireland finished the stronger side.

Ofa Tu’ungafasi: N/A. Failed his

HIA 1 after being cleaned out by Bundee Aki, but the incident was missed as rugby’s issues with head high contact and foul play continued.

Tupou Vaa’i: 5 Played the last halfhour and carried well, but there was always a frantic element to the ABs’ comeback attempts.

Dalton Papalii: 4 Replaced Cane for the final quarter but was swimming against the tide.

Folau Fakatava: 4 The Highlanders No 9 looks at home in the test arena.

Richie Mo’unga: 4 Couldn’t find the space he enjoys in Super Rugby during his 19 minutes on the field.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck: N/A Tough test to make a debut. Only saw 11 minutes of action.
