Pamper your four-legged best buddy

Pet lovers are likely to have a few quirky characteristics that other pet lovers can relate to. They probably have a designated pet conversation voice, frequently exchange stories about their beloved pooch or feline friend, and no doubt have a picture of them as a screen saver on their phone. Some even go as far as having a dedicated Instagram just for their animals. And with those puppy-dog eyes and curled-up kitty cuteness, it’s only natural to want to share their adorable antics with the world. To put it mildly, a pet lover’s love knows no bounds.

For those that consider themselves pet obsessed and with the festive season around the corner, here are a few ideas to ensure your canine or feline friend will be over the moon come Christmas morning. Some of these are practical gifts intended to help out both owner and pet; others are more likely to be purchased by the truly pet obsessed and consequently might seem a little over the top to mere mortals.

■ A lick mat can be attached to a shower wall to distract skittish dogs with yummy peanut butter while their human baths or grooms them.

■ A dog raincoat is both functional and adorable. It’ll keep their fur dry and with holes for a leash and reflective strips, it’s the perfect walking-in-the-rain outfit.

■ A memory foam dog bed is perfect for dogs with pesky joint problems.

■ For the feline that’s not so keen on sharing, a microchip pet feeder opens only for the cat with the assigned microchip. Great for multi-cat households where the boss cat steals food from the other.

■ A set of waterproof dog booties keep a dog’s paws from getting damaged by rough surfaces, hot pavements and sharp thorns. With these on, their dog can roam free and the owner can relax knowing their dog is protected.

■ An elevated dog and cat bowl is perfect for messy eaters. The barriers stop food from escaping, and spilled water is caught in a basin below. Rumour has it there are also bowls that allow pets to sit at just the right height to eat; great for animals with sensitive digestive systems.

■ A cat perch that attaches to a window so their feline friend can sunbathe all day long and do what cats do best; nothing.

■ A dog treat dispensing toy will mentally stimulate dogs who love both playtime and treats. Even the most rambunctious dogs will slow down to try to get a treat out of it. Does anyone else have visions of their dog smacking the dispenser with their paw all day long?

■ A fancy water fountain so your pet can drink to their heart’s content (without begging you for more).

■ A security camera so that you can interact with your pet even when you’re away from home.

■ If you’re a keen upcycler, create a home away from home for your pampered prince or princess. All manner of old and unwanted furniture can be given a new lease on life with a bit of paint and elbow grease.
