Booted or barefoot, everyone’s welcome at Sumner Social

- Carly Gooch

There’s no dress code at one beach side eatery in Christchurch.

Whether you’re in a suit, barefoot or wagging a tail, Sumner Social aims to be the “local beachside environment” for everyone, co-owner Julian Sinke said.

Opened in December 2021, the restaurant and cafe is owned by the Sinke family, including Richard Sinke, who founded the Dux de Lux, his wife, Lisa O’Brien Sinke, Richard’s son Julian, and his wife Hailey.

The indoor/outdoor flow of the premises, just metres from the surf and sand, lends itself to everyone and anyone; even well-behaved dogs are welcome wherever their humans pull up a pew.

Having a border collie as part of his family, Julian said he liked to be able to take his dog along, “and allow customers to do it as well”.

It’s Julian’s first venture in hospitality, but he’s an old hat in the business, having grown up around his dad at the original Dux de Lux and continuing to work at the numerous Dux sites.

“I’ve been working at the Dux since I was a toddler almost.

“That’s where I cut my teeth.”

He had fond memories of the “awesome spot” by the Arts Centre, having met friends there he is still in touch with.

“There were some wild times in that place.”

Having experience at all the off-shoots of the Dux put him in good stead for initially being front-of-house at Sumner Social, but he said he had recently started focusing on running the business “from the outside“to dedicate more time to his young family.

“I’m a people person, I like being out there with everyone.”

The eatery’s menu focuses on showcasing the relaxed vibes of the beach, he said including the popular eggs bene, French toast and smashed avocado on sourdough on the brunch menu.

Lunch and dinner offers share plates, a smattering of mains and the classic burger or fish and chips.

Taco Tuesday dominates the second day of the working week with two for one tacos, while Fridays are celebrated by Burgers and Beers (burger, tap beer, wine or juice) for $30.

The best day of the week, Saturday, offers Spritz and Sounds with live music and drink specials between 1pm and 4pm.

“I love hospitality,” Julian said.

“I will always be involved.”
