Frozen Georgie Pie from 2020 up for auction

-

A four-year-old frozen Georgie Pie is being sold on Trade Me with a reserve of $1.

Isaac Broome, 41, was cleaning out his freezer when he came across the edible memorabilia of his childhood – a Steak Mince and Cheese Georgie Pie.

Broome picked up the “Kiwi icon” when McDonald’s announced that it was discontinuing the pies, for the second time, in 2020.

“I ate two on the day and decided to bring a third one home to keep, and I’d forgotten it was there until I was cleaning out the freezer last weekend,” Broome said.

He said he’d loved Georgie Pie for years, and finding the hidden gem in the freezer brought back a lot of nostalgia.

“I remember them as a kid back in the ’80s and ’90s. My Grandma used to take me down to the Takanini branch.”

Since the purchase four years ago, Broome has been diagnosed with gluten intolerance. His moment of enjoying the pie was over.

“I decided I’d put it on Trade Me so someone else can enjoy it.”

The Trade Me listing, marked in “new” condition, has gained a lot of traction, with almost 400 people adding it to their watch list.

“Calling all Georgie Pie lovers! One of the last Georgie Pies from the last week that they were being sold by McDonalds. This has been in my freezer since then,” it reads. “Rare opportunity to get your hands on one of these classic steak mince and cheese pies one last time. $1 reserve, this cool auction closes lunch time Saturday!”

Georgie Pie opened in 1977 as its own food chain, the brainchild of Tom Ah Chee, before McDonald's bought the chain in 1996 and acquired the store locations.

The auction closes today at noon.
