Street Cred: Keeping it sustainable
Great style, well put together, or just someone who catches our eye. Every week reporter Carly Gooch gets out and about to discover the people behind the clothes in Canterbury.
Spotted after work in Christchurch city centre, these women have their favourite spots around town they enjoy escaping to, even if it’s just getting outdoors to keep fit.
Jessy Moffat, 43 is a youth worker living southwest of Christchurch.
“I’m passionate about giving back to youth in the community and looking after kids from Te Aratai College.”
She combines it with her love of the outdoors – training teens for the Coast to Coast. “It keeps me fit.”
Her career began when she worked on and off for a couple of years with children in the Bronx, New York in her early 20s.
She says she’s usually dressed in active wear but due to an event, she stepped out of her comfortable leggings for something more stylish.
She wears Tommy Hilfiger shoes, an H&M skirt, belt and shirt, a Seed Heritage knit vest and KMart cross body bag.
Josie Steyn, 23, lives in Halswell and works in recruitment.
Steyn says she has just started her job in recruitment and is “super stoked” to be there after completing her master’s degree in industrial and organisational psychology.
“I’m big on sustainability,” she says, a passion which saw her research sustainability in the workplace during her studies. “I want to minimise consumption and impact as much as I can.”
She uses the bus and buys pre-loved clothes – including her graduation dress.
Nifty on Cashel St is her all-time favourite. “Most of my wardrobe is from there,” she said.
She wears a skirt recently bought from Paper Bag Princess, new shoes that were a gift from a friend and items she’s had for years.
Kerry Larby, 47, is a teacher living in St
Albans.
Her “favourite place” she says is Scorpio Books. “I love reading and treating myself to a book.”
She is going on a five-week holiday in May for a wedding in London, with travel through Greece and Italy, which prompted her to buy a book on Greece instead of doing her research on the internet.
“I like to have a physical copy so at night I can flick through and get some inspiration. “I’m so excited.”
She wears Beau Coop shoes from Head Over Heels, a Kate Sylvester dress that is her “go-to” and a Moochi trench coat.
