Street Cred: Not ready to give up summer

Great style, well put together, or just someone who catches our eye. Every week reporter Carly Gooch gets out and about to discover the people behind the clothes in Canterbury.

Bright colours and dresses on Rangiora’s High St showed the temperatures are still warm enough to leave the summer clothes in the wardrobe for a little longer. Bobbie Gould, 24, is a fashion retail assistant living in Rangiora. She has lived in North Canterbury her entire life, growing up in Kaiapoi before her family moved to Rangiora after the earthquakes.

Her first job after leaving school was at Subway, which she says was a “traumatic” few years.

“I feel like it’s a good job to start out in, serving hangry people.”

She says hospitality puts you in good stead to be able to tackle even the most difficult customers.

“It sets you up for hard work. It’s really intense and a lot of work for the minimum wage.”

But everyone had “to start somewhere”, she says.

She loves fashion and make up so enjoys her job at Robe Boutique, which she’s had for a couple of years.

She wears Billini boots, a Zara dress and a Glassons trench coat.

Mel Bannan, in her 50s, is a claims specialist living in North New Brighton, Christchurch.

She’s “not ready to give up summer” yet, she says, having recently returned from 10 days in Fiji, staying at the Outrigger Resort.

A “born and bred Wellingtonian”, she moved to Christchurch two years ago and doesn’t want to go back to windy Wellington, she says. The only reason she would move back would be to be closer to her son. The move to Christchurch was for the “good house prices and lifestyle”.

She wears Mi Piaci heels, pants and top from Zara Spain, and bag by Michael Kors.

Lisa Cooper, 42, is a travel agent living in Ashley, North Canterbury.

She spent her formative years growing up in Christchurch and Australia and spent some time travelling the UK with her partner, who she has since married.

They travelled throughout Europe, including Spain, Portugal, France and England in a campervan, and she laughs about how they’re “still married” despite the challenges of living in close quarters.

There were no GPS devices back then, she says, so they had to find their way around with paper maps. “There were arguments … I still can’t read a map.”

Navigating driving on the right side of the road was new to them, and the streets were so narrow you could put your hand out the window and touch the sides, she remembers.

She wears boots from Street Legal, a dress from Shine On, Just Jeans denim jacket and Status Anxiety bag.
