‘King of drum and bass’ descends on Chch

- Brett Kerr-Laurie

The “king of drum and bass” will be transforming Christchurch’s tranquil Cathedral Square into a mosh pit of sweaty ravers this weekend with heavy bass and expert blends.

A.M.C, or Alex Mark Calvert, was named best drum and bass DJ in the world last year - for the fifth time. On Saturday, the UK legend will be bringing the heat to pre-winter Christchurch as part of his New Zealand tour: Adrenaline.

The music titan has performed across the globe and is widely considered the most technical drum and bass performer in the scene, who isn’t afraid to utilise all equipment at his disposal.

Testament to this is his notorious six-deck DJ set performed in 2022 (meaning he could simultaneously mix up to six songs at once). During the hour-long performance, A.M.C played 86 songs, averaging nearly one new tune every 90 seconds.

A.M.C is also a renowned music producer, with songs such as Bass, Operator and Brazil, and many remixes amassing millions of plays on Spotify.

His music isn’t for the faint of heart though, with extreme focus on the sub-bass often accompanied by darker undertones. People with epilepsy are advised to avoid the performance due to the flash-bang like lighting. The loud gig will undoubtedly be heard across the city due to the convenient location of Cathedral Square - a large area will be fenced off , with a bar and stage inside for ticket holders.

It isn’t the first time gigs have been set up outside the Christ Church Cathedral ruins this year, with the equally famous DJ Andy C blasting music in March and 1991 dropping doubles in February.

Event company Audiology Touring called A.M.C the “king of drum and bass” and promised his three-hour “audio visual spectacle” alongside MC Phantom on the microphone would “send your pulse-rate through the roof”.

Other acts to fill the 4pm to 10pm time slot included The Upbeats, Cyrus and Indecisive, with the “specially curated lineup” contributing to an unforgettable night.

Tickets went on sale Tuesday, March 19, through Flicket and only final release tickets were still available as of yesterday.
