Sevens star out of Olympics

-

A tearful Shiray Kaka has announced she will miss the Paris Olympics in an emotional social media post.

The Black Ferns Sevens star revealed she ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee during New Zealand’s triumph over Great Britain at the Singapore Sevens.

It is the second time Kaka has torn her ACL during her career.

The long-term injury will rule Kaka out of the World Sevens Series Grand Final in Madrid and has dashed her dream of representing New Zealand at a second Olympics.

“Thank you to everyone who sent their love, their prayers and their healing to me. It didn’t work,” Kaka said through tears.

“I did my ACL again, on the right leg this time and will not be a part of the Olympic team.

“It’s just not my time in the sevens jersey right now which means that someone else will get to step up and have the most amazing opportunity to play at an Olympics Games.

“I’m not going to dwell it on it for too long. Although I don’t have an ACL, I do still have a personality. Thank you for supporting me. Please keep supporting the teams in black.”

Kaka’s long-term injury is a big blow for the defending champion Black Ferns Sevens team.

The 29-year-old has made more than 130 appearances for New Zealand since her debut in Dubai in 2013, scoring 68 tries.

Kaka was part of the Black Ferns team that won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Black Ferns Sevens are already sweating on the health of captain Sarah Hirini, who is in a race against the clock to be fit for Paris after suffering a similar injury late last year.
