Drink-driver who crashed, injured, gets home term

-

A man who damaged a vehicle and caused injuries while drink-driving appeared in Invercargill District Court yesterday.

Cody Grant Mcmurdo, 28, bricklayer, appeared before Judge Michael Turner for driving with a blood alcohol level of 166mg causing injury on October 22 and breaching post-detention conditions on October 21.

Judge Turner sentenced him to eight months’ home detention, ordered him to pay $7353.60 reparation and disqualified him from driving for 18 months.

Judge Turner said Mcmurdo had been driving with a female passenger when he failed to give way.

He collided with another vehicle causing both vehicles to travel across the intersection on to the grass verge, he said.

When police arrived, the female was sitting in the vehicle with leg and upper body injuries and the driver of the other vehicle was uninjured. However, his car was severely damaged, Judge Turner said.

Mcmurdo admitted having consumed alcohol earlier in the evening, the judge said.

Mcmurdo suffered an arm injury and along with the female was transported to Southland Hospital, where a blood sample was taken.

Judge Turner said the blood alcohol level was high but there were no permanent injuries suffered.
