It’s pennants time again for Southland golfers. The competition, which includes presidents, vicepresidents and handicap pennants is Golf Southland’s most popular one, with plenty of clubs vying for the honours.

The Mataura Licensing Trust-sponsored Vice Presidents Pennants starts on Saturday (February 18), with eight teams from six clubs competing.

The Handicap Pennants starts on Sunday (February 19), with 34 teams from 21 clubs. The Handicap Pennants contenders will be split into four divisions, with rounds at Bluff, Mataura, Waikaka and Dipton all playing out on Sunday.

The annual DB Liquorland Charity Golf Tournament is being played on Wednesday, February 22, at Queens Park.

The tournament will raise funds for Conductive Education Southern.

There are still spots available for teams of two – ladies or mens – and it is just $20 per player which qualifies as a charitable donation.

For entries please contact Mike at Queens Park Golf Club.

Winton Golf Club member Sam Woods had a very impressive couple of rounds of golf recently. Last Thursday, playing in the New Zealand Masters Games at Dunedin’s Chisholm Park, he shot his age – 79 – and, as if that wasn’t impressive enough, he did it again at Winton on Saturday. A rare feat!

Gore golfer Ivan Elder, 93, also had a good weekend at the New Zealand Masters Games and was reported to have been the oldest

competitor at the event.

Golf Southland’s golf development manager, Jenna Gainford, is expanding the 9 Hole Golf Series this term, opening it to anyone – of any age and ability.
