Teenage kidnap accused’s name made public

- John Edens in Queenstown

Name suppression for the youngest of eight people accused of a violent kidnapping near Arrowtown has lapsed.

Brooke Sylvia Carpenter, 17, of Kawarau Falls, was granted continuing interim name suppression last month by Judge Michael Turner.

The teenager was originally granted name suppression on medical grounds by Judge Dominic Flatley when she appeared in Queenstown District Court in December alongside coaccused.

Judge Turner continued the name suppression until Monday, and a district court registrar yesterday confirmed there was no application to pursue continued name suppression.

Carpenter was remanded on bail to a post-committal conference alongside co-accused on February 28.

Bail conditions stipulate she must live at her Kawarau Falls home, abide by a 9pm to 7am curfew, not contact any of the parties and surrender her passport.

The group – Carpenter, Jonathan Charles Burke, 25, a glazier, Charlotte Amelia Spencer Dickson, 18, checkout operator, Michael Philip Coulter, 25, panelbeater, Brodie O’rourke, 24, builder, Daniel John Kissell, 28, draughtsman, and Sam Gordon Coupe, 28, glazier, of Invercargill – was charged with the kidnap of Cromwell man Jason Maynard and aggravated assault on November 26.

Queenstown receptionist Rachel Maree Faul, 20, faces three charges – kidnap, aggravated wounding and reckless driving.

Faul, of Speargrass Flat, was last month separately charged with dealing in ecstasy on November 25 and remanded to February 28 on all matters for a postcommittal conference. No pleas have been entered by any of the accused.

The kidnap and wounding charges relate to an incident on November 26 in which Mr Maynard, 28, and his girlfriend, 23, were allegedly lured to the intersection of the Crown Range road and State Highway 6.

There, the victim was apparently attacked and then allegedly bundled into a car and driven to Arrowtown, where he was dumped on the side of a road.

At a post-committal conference, one of the accused on bail will return to court to renew bail conditions.
