Langman energised by camp

Laura Langman found out plenty at the recent Silver Ferns camp – what the next four years with the national side is going to be like, what she wants to achieve this season, and that she is definitely not the fittest in the squad any more.

The two-week stint in Auckland wrapped up earlier this month and, although the Ferns don’t play until spring, Langman left the camp feeling exuberant.

‘‘It was fantastic; it really set the tone for what our next four years is going to be like,’’ the dynamic midcourter said. ‘‘We are striving to be Commonwealth Games champs and world champs, so it certainly set the tone about what being the best is all about and what we expect from a starting seven, a squad member, and so on.

‘‘Whether you’ve been there for one cap, 100 caps, 120 caps, it was really motivating and inspiring to want to stay there.

‘‘I think it certainly, for me, really boosted me in terms of confidence and clarity in where I want to go and what I want to do this season.’’

The 25-year-old has played 80 consecutive tests for New Zealand and was the captain in the most recent series against Australia when regular skipper Casey Williams was injured.

The two weeks in camp involved very few team discussions with coach Waimara Taumaunu, which was a positive in Langman’s eyes.

‘‘I think Wai’s not a big one on meetings, which is great, and so when we do meet, we know it’s for a purpose,’’ she said.
