Two Jacckas could be Smaills’ pair of aces

- Jamie Searle AUCKLAND GRC

Owner-breeder Charlie Smaill has labelled Jaccka Nat and Jaccka Tom as the best of his five horses racing at Ascot Park tomorrow.

Smaill and wife Ailsa have bred standardbreds on a large scale for many years and are clients of quite a few southern trainers. The Riversdale couple are seldom without a runner at Southland meetings.

Jaccka Nat and Jaccka Tom clash in tomorrow’s Ascot Park Hotel Four-year-old And Older Pace.

By Live Or Die, Jaccka Nat capped consistent place form with a maiden win at Winton eight days ago.

He is trained at Roxburgh by Geoff and Jude Knight, while Jaccka Tom is in Murray Brown’s Invercargill stable.

Jaccka Tom won the second of his three starts by 8½ lengths at Ascot Park on January 23. He led and was run down by Jaccka Luke and Hardie Bromac at Wyndham on February 5.

Charlie Smaill said Jaccka Nat and Jaccka Tom were both good chances tomorrow.

“It’s hard to choose between them,” he said yesterday. “Nat might be a bit tougher. Tom’s got a lethal sprint.”

The Smaills also have Jaccka Creek (Lone Star Cafe and Bar Trot), Jess Jaccka (Elmwood Catering Handicap) and Omega Jaccka (Centrepoint/south City Liquorland Pace) starting at the Invercargill Harness Racing Club meeting.

Jaccka Creek is a risk because he has been galloping in races.

“He’s got the ability to win but he’s not reliable enough,” Smaill said.

Jess Jaccka is returning from a short break and has won in a fresh state previously.

The 2700m will suit Omega Jaccka in race 10, as she has had a win and a third from two starts over the distance. Her past seven starts have been in races over 2400m or less. Trial form Race 1: Galaxy Hunter, 1st Ascot Park, Wednesday. Race 3: Extreme Velocity, 1st Winton, February 8. Race 6: Sudon Speed, 2nd Ascot Park. Race 7: Kai Bree She, 2nd Ascot Park.
