Cameron eyes going away gift at Winton

- JAMIE SEARLE

Sean Cameron’s stay in the south comes to an end after next weekend’s Riverton meeting.

The south Auckland trainer brought 12 horses to the Southland autumn circuit five weeks ago and has campaigned some of them at Otago and Canterbury meetings. Cameron has gained two wins and six placings on the trip.

His four starters at the Wairio Jockey Club’s meeting at Winton on Sunday are Go Go Gonzo, Storm Home, Regalo Reaal and Werio. Another in the team, Jafa Jill, is second emergency for the 1600m Nind Dairy Maiden.

Go Go Gonzo and Storm Home rate highly for the Nightcaps Contracting Rating 65 and Jumpers’ 2000m. Five-year-old Go Go Gonzo regained form with a strongfinishing second against rating 75 company at Riverton on April 30.

Storm Home was second at Wingatui on April 9 and then hung out and couldn’t be ridden properly in the last 200m when sixth at Riccarton on April 18.

Regalo Reaal will attempt

to win the $25,000 Wairio Cup for the second consecutive year. He won the Cup at Ascot Park last year.

The Wairio club had to transfer this year’s meeting to Winton because of track repairs at Ascot Park.

Regalo Reaal is taking a few runs to sharpen, but Cameron believes the 7-year-old gelding is not far away from showing his best form. The stayer’s last-start seventh at Riverton on April 30 was encouraging.

Stablemate Werio is entered for the Wairio Cup and the PGG Wrightson Rating 75 1600m on Sunday. Werio ran solid races for sixth (rating 75) and seventh (rating 85) at Riccarton in recent weeks.

Country Lad (sacked) and Wotsittooyah (retired through injury) will not be returning north with Cameron, who plans to race some of his team at the Trentham premier 2 meeting on May 23.

Cameron won the $40,000 Trentham Gold Cup with Regalo Reaal at the same meeting last year on the way home from his Southland trip.
