Food to meet fashion at Bluff oyster festival

- GEORGIA WEAVER

The Bluff Oyster and Food Festival has had a big response from budding designers for this year’s Kayes Bakery Creativity Awards.

Thirty-four entries have been received for the fashion show, which will take place on Friday as part of the festival.

The winners will then parade their designs at the Bluff Oyster and Food Festival on Saturday.

Bluff publicity and promotions officer Lindsay Beer said various reasons, including the change in venue, meant the designs could not all be shown on the Saturday as they had been in previous years.

Instead, for a gold coin entry, the audience will be treated to a night of Southland creativity and a performance by the Bluff School Kapa Haka Group on Friday.

Categories in the show are the Oyster Sack Fashion Parade and the Foveaux Fantasy Awards, with sections for primary and secondary school pupils and an open section.

The overall winner of the Supreme Creativity Award will be chosen from those who won the individual sections, with $2000 to be divided among the runners-up and winners of the individual sections and for the overall winner.

The new venue, on the corner of Lee and Barrow streets, is just about ready.

Last year the festival was cancelled in the early afternoon after strong winds wreaked havoc.

The Bluff Oyster and Food Festival committee had decided on a new venue before the disruption, and was this year confident weather would not be a factor, Beer said.

Ticket sales were on par with previous years, but Beer expected a spike in days leading up to the event.

‘‘We’re confident we’ll another very big crowd.’’

Doors open for the Creativity Awards at 6.30pm on Friday..

Gates for the Bluff Oyster and Food Festival open at 10.30am on Saturday. Tickets are $25 for adults and $7 for children aged 12 and under and are available from www.ticketdirect.co.nz, the Invercargill City Council, Bluff Service Centre and Barnes Wild Bluff Oysters.
