Pioneer rack up 50 points in an hour

-

Pioneer dominated with a 55-7 win in their division two match against Riverton at Newman Park on Saturday.

Pioneer had 50 points on the board at the 60 minute mark.

Hooker Shane Ross was voted man of the match. The bonus point win keeps Pioneer in second place on the points table at the end of round one.

Waikiwi firmed up their top four position with a 11-10 win over Blues B at Donovan Park. Waikiwi led 3-0 at halftime in what coach Derek Manson described as an awful team performance.

Second five-eighth Dillon Von Solms, hooker Kyle McKenzie and halfback Vaughan McKay were the shining lights.

Blues coach Simon Frisby said: ‘‘I thought [Waikiwi] would have been better but they hung in there and were obviously good enough on the scoreboard at the end.

‘‘We had our opportunities but we are still a couple of trainings away from coming right and starting our run to the finals.’’

Collegiate hosted the Mossburn Stags at Lindisfarne Street, and scored six tries in their 44-19 win.

It was Collegiate’s first win of the year and the bonus point was in the bag before halftime when leading 33-7.

Carlos Morrison has been the Collegiate openside flanker this season but he was tried in the midfield on Saturday and made a huge impact scoring four tries.

Collegiate coach Vinnie Lawerence was pleased with the big win.

‘‘We put an emphasis on reducing our infringing at the ruck which made a difference to our momentum.

‘‘Former player/coach Jo Koriada played his first game of the season and it is great to have him back, the boys followed his lead. We are just hitting our straps now, and are ready to turn all those close losses we have had into wins in the second round. Retribution is on our minds.’’

Mataura targeted their game against Marist B at Tulloch Park as a must-win but the town team were hungrier and won 19-15.

Mataura led 10-7 at halftime but Marist scored two tries early in the second half.

In the crossover game, the unbeaten Ohai-Nightcaps went down 38-7 to the unbeaten division one team Wyndham.
