Man jailed for hitting boy

-

An Invercargill man has been sentenced to three months’ jail for assaulting an eight-year-old child..

Neville Robert Carlaw appeared before Judge Michael Turner in the Invercargill District Court yesterday for assaulting a child on November 2, 2013.

The court was told Carlaw backhanded the child to the face and then hit him with a rolled-up newspaper.

The judge said Carlaw had a level of intellectual impairment and limited support in the community.

Carlaw’s actions would have been traumatic to the boy, the judge said.

The child had been visiting his home and, while he might have been misbehaving, it was not an excuse for Carlaw’s behaviour toward him, the judge said.
