Savouring Simons

- Annette Gunther Wallacetown Thelma J Buck Invercargill

It was great to read the front-page article on Southland’s icecreammaking family the Simons.

Brian may have found farming a tad too slow for his ever-creative mind but my late husband Gerald and I certainly enjoyed the support, friendship and neighbourliness we received from them in the early 1960s as they brought a freshness to the then sleepy backwater of Mokotua. They were happy days.

Your readers may be interested to learn that Brian is also a trained and talented signwriter. No doubt the business benefited from that skill as well. Some mornings the newspaper is so dry it is tomorrow’s fish and chip paper.

Monday’s page one was laughable.

Get on with the work for the Invercargill City Council and forget putting your hand out for something the Southland District Council can do in their area.

We have streets dug up everywhere, a museum going nowhere, and south city looks stalled with Esk St not much better.

Where is Southland’s earthquake report? I have heard results for Auckland earthquake buildings.

I fear for the rates rise with the new power meters coming in, Rugby Park, and everything else that is on the long-term plan.

We hard-strapped ratepayers need a break. Are we going to get one?

The ratepayers of Invercargill must take a stand
