Get the look

Actress Anna Kendrick has her red-carpet makeup nailed. Here’s how to get the beautiful purpleeyeliner look she sported at the Pitch Perfect 2 premiere.

Start with an eyelid primer – this look relies on the contrast between dark, inky liner and pale, creamy lids. You’ll want your eyelids to provide a neutral canvas with no redness or discoloration showing through. A fancy new one is Yves Saint Laurent Couture Eye Primer, $55, which comes in two skintone shades. A much cheaper option is Australis Eyeshadow Primer, $16.50, but it’s not tinted so just add a little concealer or foundation on top.

Now cover lids with a nude shadow that has just a hint of sheen. Maybelline New York Eye Studio Color Tattoo Shadow in Barely Branded Metal, $13.99, is a good match for what Kendrick is sporting here. Next, apply black pencil eyeliner all around both upper and lower inner rims (ie the Kate Middleton signature look – skip this part if you’re squeamish). Next comes the cat’s eye liner in purplish blue. Gel liner can be tricky to apply, which is why Benefit’s They’re Real Push-Up Liner, $42, has scored so many fans (it’s the top-selling prestige eyeliner in the US). This pen makes it easy thanks to its slanted tip and push-up dispenser. In July new colours will be added to the range, including blue, purple and green.

Kendrick has also highlighted her eyes by adding a light streak of the same golden eyeshadow (from lids) smudged underneath her black eyeliner on the lower lashes. Skip the massive Kardashianesque fake lashes and just go for a few individual falsies applied at each outer corner of the eye. Ardell Individual Lashes DuraLash, $13.99, gives you a good selection.

Now all you need is a slick of nude lipgloss, clear brow gel to define eyebrows and shine spray in your hair to mimic Kendrick’s glossy locks.
