Warren Parry upsets world
champion darts player
It was described by some as one of the biggest upsets in the sporting world.
Following the Sydney Masters darts tournament in August Parry went from relative unknown Invercargill slaughterman, to being hounded for media interviews. Parry went from 5-1 down to beat world No 1 and reigning world champion Michael van Gerwen 6-5.
Southern Steel secure first
win in Australia
The Southern Steel won their first ever game on Australian soil when they beat the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Adelaide.
In 16 attempts the Steel had failed to grab a trans-Tasman win in Australia but attempt No 17 was a memorable one. They beat Adelaide 61-59 to break the drought.
Tom Scully wins Commonwealth Games gold
The Southland cyclist got his hands on a gold medal in Glasgow in August when he won the points race. Scully dominated the race, winning six of the 16 sprints.
Southland Stags beat Canterbury in Christchurch
The Stags visited Christchurch as rank outsiders to beat Canterbury.
Their form leading into the game was patchy, while Canterbury were able to roll out players such as Dan Carter.
However, Southland do have a knack of producing the goods in Christchurch and the 2014 national provincial championship game was no different.
The Stags won 28-26 and to add to the magnitude of the occasion it was Tim Boys’ 100th game.
Pieter Bulling wins track cycling world champs gold
Bulling became Southland’s latest world champion in February in Paris.
The 21-year-old was part of the New Zealand’s men’s team pursuit who claimed the gold medal.
