Freeman: Granddaughter’s killing tragic waste
Actor Morgan Freeman is mourning the death of his stepgranddaughter who was found stabbed to death on a Manhattan street in an apparent exorcism.
Police responding to a 911 call about 3am on Sunday (local time) found E’Dena Hines, 33, lying on the street with multiple stab wounds to the chest. A 30-year-old man, said to be Hines’ boyfriend, has been taken into police custody.
‘‘The world will never know her artistry and talent,’’ Freeman said in a statement.
Witness Brydon Tarafa, 28, said that he was in his apartment when he heard ‘‘Jesus Christ is born’’.
‘‘I heard the man yelling ’Jesus Christ is born’, like yelling, screaming maniacally,’ Tarafa said. ‘‘And I heard a woman scream shortly before that.’’
Another witness, George Hudackoa said he heard the boyfriend scream ‘‘Get out, devils! I cast you out, devils! In the name of Jesus Christ, I cast you out.’’
According to reports, police found her boyfriend standing over her body screaming. The knife was recovered at the scene.
Police have not released the name of the man, who has been taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
The 78-year-old star of The Shawshank Redemption added:
‘‘Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person.
‘‘Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. ‘‘May she rest in peace.’’ He also thanked fans for the support ‘‘my family has received regarding the tragic and senseless passing of my granddaughter.’’
Hines had studied acting and was involved with teaching urban youth. She is the granddaughter of Freeman’s first wife.
She had recently returned to live in New York after being cast in an indie film, Landing Up, which began shooting in June.
‘‘My dream has come true and its just beginning,’’ Hines wrote of landing the role.
‘‘Life can make you want to give up or walk away; sometimes it gives you the strength to appreciate when you do get your happy ending.’’
No charges have been filed. Police are investigating the stabbing.
