Money grows on trees for Girls’ High
Tree planting has been among fundraising activites the Southland Girls’ High Schools’ first XI have undertaken for their next trip.
They planted a total of 1000 trees at Woodlands and Mokotua, co-coach Eddie Peters said.
Girls’ High are playing at the New Zealand secondary school girls’ premier football tournament at Crown Park, Taupo, from August 31 to September 4. Girls’ High gained entry by winning a satellite tournament in Dunedin last year.
The other five South Island schools in the 32-team tournament in Taupo are Columba College, St Hilda’s College, Waimea College, Nelson College for Girls and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School.
Girls’ High is in pool A, along with Mount Albert Grammar, Tri- dent High School (Whakatane) and Massey High School. Mount Albert Grammar won the tournament last year, in 2013 and 2010.
In Dunedin on Wednesday, Girls’ High will play Otago Girls’ High School and Waitaki Girls’ High School in a triangular tournament. Girls’ High beat James Hargest College 3-0 in the final of the Southland secondary school girls’ competition at the ILT Football Turf on Wednesday. Sammy Murrell (two) and Katie Knarston scored the goals.
Co-coach Eddie Peters reckons the Girls’ High team is possibly the best ever to represent the school.
‘‘There’s a very good team spirit and we’ve got very good players in key positions,’’ Peters said.
On the team’s injured list are captain Lauren Brown (toe ligament problem) and Lauren Christie (broken collarbone). Six members of the team are in their last year at Girls’ High.
