Spring set to be a bit chilly

- Fairfax NZ

Crowds have swarmed to the Botanic Gardens in Wellington for the annual Tulip Sunday spring festival but they should make the most of the warmth with warnings of a cold spring.

MetService forecasts are for a spring that is ‘‘noticeably colder’’, drier, and windier than normal. Meteorologist Georgina Griffiths said there would be a cool start nationally to October.

El Nino is caused by a ‘‘warm tongue’’ of water across the Pacific Ocean from South America to Vanuatu, which affected weather, she said.

On Sunday visitors were soaking up the sunshine at the Tulip Sunday festival that coincided with the start of daylight savings.
