Age-group rugby teams keep the flag flying high

Southland’s junior rugby teams are in sublime form as they showcase their abilities at various tournament­s thought the country.

Southland rugby followers can be buoyed by the performanc­es of the province’s age-group teams.

The Southland under-19, under18, under-16, under-65kg and under-48kg teams are all involved in tournament­s this week.

The South Island under-48kg and under-65kg tournament­s are in Timaru where Southland teams have made an impressive start.

Southland under-48kg have had big wins over Marlboroug­h (50-0), Nelson Bays (34-12) and Canterbury Country 19-10.

The under-65kg

team

have pulled of probably the result of the week for Southland rugby with their 8-5 win over Canterbury Metro.

The Southland under-16 and under-18 teams start their tournament­s in Methven and Kaiapoi, respective­ly, on Friday.

However, in the leadup games on Saturday they both impressed.

In Dunedin, the Southland under-18 team beat South Canterbury 44-17 while the under-16 team had a 33-7 win over North Otago.

In the national under-19 tournament in Taupo, Southland and picked up a 23-22 win over Northland on Saturday.

The next game Counties tomorrow.

Southland also has a team at the South Island secondary schoolgirl­s’ tournament in Dunedin this week.
