Aston Flats access

To those who access the Upper Oreti area especially the Aston Flats and enjoy doing so, you should be aware the Southland District Council is in the process of promulgating a roading bylaw which will restrict your 4WD access. Submissions close on July 30.

Meaning of terror

Prior to the fitting of new navigation systems on passenger jets flying in and out of Queenstown, on a weekly basis our winter weather used to cause bigger disruptions to passengers than Sunday’s evacuation of the airport.

So the article ‘‘Bomb scare on Qtown plane’’ on page 2 of Monday’s times was appropriately placed.

In contrast, Tuesday’s unsubstantiated, speculative headline article certainly didn’t warrant the front page, let alone the ink used on it.

The Cambridge definition of terror is ‘‘violent action that causes extreme fear’’. Apart from the disruption, the worst thing that happened on Sunday was a lot of people got very cold.

The Southland Times makes no mention of any violent actions or fear’’ (apart from someone being scared when they heard a plane take off.... really? So how did we get Tuesday’s headline, ‘‘Is Queenstown a terror target?

I would suggest that articles like Tuesday’s headline cause a lot more fear and concern in our society than Sunday’s isolated incident. Mark Lewis Frankton

Art collection idea

In regards the placement of our art collection in the CBD, then a sensible place for the art collection in a permanent location is the Whitcomb & Tombs building. This is owned by the ratepayers and has been lying empty and unused for many years now.

The W&T building, which is adjacent to our city library, was purchased for the council use for dubious justification by Tim Shadbolt on behalf of the ratepayers. It was at the time when the one Southland local government proposal was been made for local governance by central government.

By joining the library with the W&T building and along with clever design and placement, we the residents could then enjoy a pleasurable living room effect enjoyment, of our books and art collection. It would also mean the proposed controversial changes to the children’s library would be redundant, as all the extras the library proposes in the redevelopment plan can be placed within the W&T building.

Locating the art collection within this area, will mean our art and library is available to all city residents regardless of their personal issues or problems, as bus central is located nearby to the library.

Economically it also make sense, this proposal, as there would be no cost of rent with the W&T building, and the cost of staffing of the art gallery can be part of the present library budget. Pauline McIntosh Invercargill

Thanks Steel

I would like to change your backpage headline from ‘‘Steel let it slip at finals stage’’ to ‘‘Steel ... oh so close!’’

To Noeline, Wendy and the whole Steel squad, thank you for a wonderful season. It was a pleasure to watch your skills and controlled patience on display. The end of the ANZ has not left me sad; instead I am excited about New Zealand growing its own talent. Let’s show the Aussies we can produce skilful netballers too.

Jhaniele, I hope we haven’t seen the last of you and your gorgeous family. You are a pleasure to watch and are an adopted Southlander.

So girls, hold your heads up high and we will remember a brilliant semifinal that so very nearly went our way. Lynne Kelman Invercargill
