- DAVE NICOLL

Southlanders should brace themselves, winter is coming.

Metservice communications meteorologist Lisa Murray said there was a heavy snow warning issued for Southland this weekend.

Showers were expected to turn to snow above 200 metres during Saturday afternoon and evening, with snow near to sea level at night, Murray said.

‘‘In the 12 hours from 9.00pm Saturday to 9.00am Sunday expect 10 to 20cm to accumulate above 200 metres, with lesser amounts to near sea level.’’

The cold temperatures overnight and snow expected to low levels meant road conditions could be a concern, Murray said.

A severe weather watch had been issued for snow for inland Otago from tonight.

Severe frosts could expected, Murray said.

The NZ Transport Agency had warnings in place from Thursday for motorists travelling on State Highway 6, between Lumsden and Kawarau falls. also be

Snow and ice was present on the road and road users were advised to drive for winter conditions and take extra care.

Near Te Anau, heavy rain on Thursday night caused damage to the newly opened trail between Te Anau and Queens Reach, with a slip covering part of the trail.

The trail opened officially opened about a month ago.
