Arts Trail new feature of Arts Festival

- DEBBIE JAMIESON

A new Arrowtown Arts Trail has been developed as part of this year’s Arrowtown Arts Festival.

Organiser Julie Hughes said the idea of the trail was to help promote local artists and inspire others with a variety of styles.

The festival runs for four days from September 15 and includes an artists’ market, free community concert, many creative workshops and a speaker series with local authors.

The trail will be hosted by the Off the Wall Gallery and takes participants on the Remarkable Experience bus to Christina Roach’s quaint historical cottage first before Jenny Mehrtens’ studio.

Mehrtens’ said she was looking forward to introducing some new people to her work.

‘‘Art is about conveying ideas I believe.

‘‘So, the more people that see your stuff the better.’’

The festival, which began last year, had been a great opportunity to bring the work of local artists together as they all worked independently of each other, she said.

The next stop on the trail is Millbrook Resort for morning tea then travel to Ben Ho and Mary Mai to see their new gallery at Lake Hayes.

Finally it returns to the Off the Wall gallery to see a jewellery demonstration by owner and artist Stuart Adams along with viewing other local and national artists work from ceramics, sculpture, jewellery and painting including work by Arrowtown artist Bridget Paape.

Afterwards people are encouraged to check out everything arty that Arrowtown has to offer including the Lakes District Museum exhibition Eyes on Vanuatu.

*The trail leaves Arrowtown on Thursday, September 15, at 9am and returns at 12.30. Bookings are essential and can be made at arrowevents.co.nz.
