SGHS advance to the South Island netball semifinals

NETBALL Southland Girls’ High School have made the semifinals of the South Island Secondary Schools netball tournament in Nelson.

The Natalie Avellino coached side remain unbeaten after picking up a 43-21 win over Ashburton College and a 45-31 victory over rivals Otago Girls’.

They have now confirmed their place at the NZSS national netball tournament as one of the top-five teams in the South Island competitio­n.

They will play St Hilda’s Collegiate in the first semifinal, while St Andrew’s play Marlboroug­h Girls’ in the other match on Thursday at 9:10am.

Verdon College’s brave shot at the A Grade semifinals came up short as they drew 37-37 with Villa Maria and lost to Marlboroug­h Girls’ 48-38 in their second round group decider.

Central Southland College tied with Craighead Diocesan 34-34 in their group two clash with both sides out of the running for the semifinals.

In other groups, St Peter’s College ended their second round with two wins and a loss, while Wakatipu had one win and two losses.

Both Gore High and Aparima lost all three second round matches.

In B Grade, both Hargest and Menzies didn’t make the semifinals, finishing the second round with a win and two losses, while Blue Mountain College’s perfect run came to an end when they lost 41-29 to Westland

Fiordland College and Northern Southland College finished the second round with a win each from three games.

FOOTBALL SBHS will playoff for third place on Thursday at 10:45am at the Linwood Boys’ Football Tournament at Turnbull Thomson Park.

They knocked over local rivals James Hargest 3-2 in their morning quarterfin­al, before losing to the highly fancied Dunedin school John McGlashan College 3-1 in the semifinals.

McGlashan were too strong for Wakatipu in their morning quarterfin­al 2-1.

In the 9-16th place playoffs, Verdon College thrashed Gore High 7-0, while Central Southland College and SBHS second XI both lost 3-0.

In the 5-8th place playoff, Wakatipu were too strong for Hargest 3-1.

Meanwhile, Wakatipu HS made the semifinals of the girls’ tournament in Dunedin with a 2-1 win over Dunstan, before they were downed by Middleton Grange in the semifinals 4-0.

Southland Girls’ High School beat James Hargest College 4-3 to make the 9-12 playoffs, where they also knocked over Kavanagh College by the same score.

Hargest defeated Menzies 1-0 in the playoffs for 12th to 16th placings.

RUGBY SBHS beat Christ’s College 19-3 in the South Island U15 boys’ tournament.

They will tackle Kings in the 3rd-4th playoff in Dunedin on Thursday.

HOCKEY Gore High were flying the Southland flag in the South Island mixed tournament in Gore.

The home team comfortabl­y defeated East Otago 4-0 in the quarterfin­als.

Wakatipu lost 4-1 to John Paul II High School in another quarterfin­al.

Northern Southland College lost to Rodney College 2-1 in their match.

In the Johnson Cup, SBHS were too strong for James Hargest 3-2 in a local derby match.

Hargest defeated Otago Girls’ 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the scores were locked a 0-0 in the Audrey Timlin Memorial in Ashburton.

In the quarterfin­als, SGHS lost 3-2 to Waimea College, while Gore High played Wanganui Collegiate.

Central Southland notched up a 1-0 over Middleton Grange at the Jenny McDonald Cup in Oamaru.

BASKETBALL James Hargest edged St Bede’s College 96-95 in the NZSS Zone 4 boys’ tournament round one, while Christchur­ch Boys’ humbled SBHS 103-48.

Hargest lost to Burnside 81-79 in the girls’ tournament.

BADMINTON It was tough going for Southland teams at the NZSS Division one badminton tournament in Hamilton.

The SGHS team lost to two top two sides Macleans College and Westlake Girls’ on Wednesday.

The team sits in mid-table in the eight team competitio­n with one round-robin match on Thursday against Palmerston North Girls’.

SBHS lost to Rangitoto College 5-1 in the boys’ tournament.
