- ELAINE KARSTEN

Demons Red claimed the annual Intercity competition in Dunedin yesterday.

They defeated clubmates Demons Blue 9-3 in an all Southland final.

Daniel Perry from Demons Red was the Top Pitcher for the weekend, with Otago’s Nelson Yorston pipping Tim Campbell (Demons Red) for the Top Batter Trophy.

Both Demons club teams went through the opening day fixtures unbeaten, with Demons Red too strong for Old Boys and Cardinals from Otago, while Demons Blue edged Dodgers Reserves and Panthers.

Demons Red accounted for Otago’s Dodgers Prems in one semifinal, while Demons Blues beat Cardinals to set up the all Southland final.

Southland’s Panthers finished fifth in the eight-team tournament, while ILT Dodgers were sixth.

With the Major League Softball teams away playing in Dunedin, a Premier 1 game took centre stage at Surrey Park on Saturday, with Titans from Eastern Southland defeating Port, 9-7.

Port started the game in style, in the first innings, with lead-off batter Jayson Kennedy hitting a hard line drive to left field for a home run.

Titans answered with two runs in the bottom of the innings when Shaye Gentle reached base on an infield error, scoring off another line drive by Brodie Andrews that was also errored, allowing Andrews to score as well.

Buckley Kirner scored the last run for Port in the top of the seventh, but it was too little too late and Titans did not require their last turn at bat.

Batting for Titans, Gentle (3) Andrews, Jeremy Robinson (2) Tim Robinson, Mercer, Shannon Robinson and Richard Robinson (1).

Port’s batters were Jayson Kennedy, Kirner, Logan Fraser (2) Te Tai and Iosefo (1).
